There has been many times when I have got into a creative funk and get stuck in a cycle of fearing to delve back into my creativeness with thoughts going through my head like “What if you’re not good at it anymore?” or “You might as well just leave it, you weren’t any good at it anyway”.
I’m highly aware that I have big negative voice in my head when it comes to my creativity, I struggle with self belief and low self esteem. But I have been holding space and treating myself with kindness when I’m spiralling like this. But I also go through a few steps and stages sometimes to help me along.
Here are the stages you may go through to help you get out of a creative funk:
- Recognize and Accept the Creative Block: The first step to overcoming a creative funk is to acknowledge that it exists and that you’re stuck in a creative rut. Accepting that it’s normal to have creative blocks from time to time can help you avoid feeling discouraged and frustrated.
- Take a Break: Sometimes the best way to break out of a creative funk is to take a step back and take a break from your creative work. Take time to recharge your batteries, relax, and engage in activities that you enjoy. Doing something unrelated to your creative work can often help you return with a fresh perspective and renewed energy.
- Seek Inspiration: Look for inspiration from various sources. Read a book, watch a movie, attend a concert, or visit an art exhibit. Sometimes exposing yourself to new ideas and perspectives can help break the monotony and spark new ideas.
- Try Something New: Experiment with a new creative medium or technique. Trying something new can help you break out of old patterns and develop new skills.
- Collaborate with Others: Collaboration can be a great way to spark new ideas and perspectives. Join a creative group or work with others who share your interests. Collaborating with others can help you break out of your comfort zone and try new things.
- Set Small Goals: Setting small goals can help you regain your momentum and boost your confidence. Break down your creative work into small, manageable tasks, and celebrate your progress along the way.
- Practice Self-Care: Taking care of yourself is essential when you’re going through a creative funk. Get enough sleep, eat well, exercise regularly, and practice mindfulness or meditation. Taking care of your physical and mental health can help you stay focused and motivated.

Have you ever been a in a creative funk? If you have how have you got out of it?
